Large vessel - porcelain on earthstone red - exploded
This first large vessel which was maybe medium by other standards was an achievement to build. I was very happy with the irregular shape.A bit like a cacoon. the porcelain has fired nicely. I learnt that in the winter or any othertime that humidity is high and the cold may effect firing then a longer drying time and a much more gradual climb are advisable. Possibly also there was air trapped from the pot collapsing on itself and needing rebuilding.
I have learnt from the process. Was very pleased with the raw pot shape. The porcelain and terracotta work well as I had wished and the surface is good. I will use it to test the effects I had planned for this pot but which will now be applied to the next one.
Also I will make moulds of future large or time consuming vessells.
I had thought about doing that with this one but was lazy and impatient to see the result.
The paddling worked well and the lip is good.
The problem with the strength of the manganese previously leaking through the surface has been solved.

Geometric teapot #1

did it work?
yes - successful (as a first prototype) i think - it pours without dripping and is pleasing visually and proportionally with a quiet grace from the smoke fired porcelain finish.

how many cups does it hold?

let me see...

oh. it doesn't pour well at all when it is full. oh. needs solving....

it holds four cups. only the last two pour well.

what else works?

the way the press moulding interacts with the slip cast skin and creates surface fissures

and the smoke firing.

and the lid but it has to be tweaked on a second mold. It -the lid-  has a hole for a handle...not sure if this works or not.

what does that mean when its full of boiling hot water? is it helpful for tea bags?

the shape is good. apart from at the back where the geometry is flat and parallel.

the interior glaze is horrible.

the handle...

apart from turning it into a conceptual piece by attaching a horsehair tail to the handle nub Im not sure what to do for the handle. Perhaps just a stick or piece of driftwood through a hole. will try this next.

there are a few problems with the mould. It needs to be improved it is going to facilitate a series.
or perhaps they can be printed straight with a ceramic printer...

Shrouds - wet linen and coil pots.

Pots wrapped in thin white linen to keep from drying out between working sessions... I am fascinated.
The stained linen and its peculiar-to-linen-or-old cotton drape - the quietness of work paused, the potency of work waiting... there is something deep.

Today's pot (a large piece) is both a huge cacoon and a swaddled infant.

To the touch it feels like a living body.

They are always  birthings...

Perhaps because I connect to my female lineage when making them.

Perhaps more will emerge from this mysterious inviting, curious shroud impression;  from the ideas of cacoons, catacombs urns eggs... something about the between of life and death, made and unmade, sleep and awake, beginnings and rebirths.. could you see these progressing

Perhaps an installation

..Everyone does installations now cant it be enough to do just a pot.

...But if an installation is coming - its coming - youve always imagined spatially as well as in 2 and 3 dimensions.

I worry spanning so many styles and ideas makes me unmarketable

..What is marketable? fuck marketable

But I want to be known

I want to be able to sustain my material needs too

...excellence is marketable- focus on pursuing your ideas to the excellent extents...
let them become and evolve.
Allow yourself this room to experiment before contracting... purusue the cacoon notion alongside the making of pots. parallel all your ideas...

..maybe cacoons maybe wrap in porcelain

but then the softness will be lost... maybe as they are then, but a collection..

strong enough
to poke that scar

found still the shards there
relieved that time now holds softness around my contacted heart,
i pull them out

stretch my lips from their sour purse.
Breathe the adrenaline spikes down til they leave my arms
Crunch straight my spine
Hand to breast
and follow my mind
to other,

Wednesday, 23 May 2018

long grown limbs,wild
and full of defiance
yet so quick to melt, when tired,
into the hallowed out curve of my arms
(ever ready)
and more often empty, now,
than full of you.
tho i know
the everything value
of it being here.

life stretches us both
as we navigate
the elasticity
of our connection
with constant correction.
not always easy.

still I see
the round innocence in your wisening face;
delight in pouring into it praise
and love
so well reflected in the brilliance of your smile...

When women rise rooted,
and we will,
The trees will be at peace,

Our hearts will cease
to thunder
in outrageous disbelief.

When women rise rooted
Our souls will feel safe
to fly home
and rest again
in the boughs of our deep anchored love.

When women rise rooted
we will not stand
to reach for our bows,
nor our clubs nor our spears.

When women rise rooted
we will stand
to sing, to dance, to hold each-others hands
and to give shade to our beloveds.

When women rise rooted,
and we will,
make no mistake about that dear ones,

we will not argue
nor debate the points
made so cleverly
to keep us in chains
but simply
and with hearts brimming
we will stretch out our arms,
gather the children
and do what needs to be done.

The trousers which i wore

Life is full
of small treasures
little jars
filled with feathers
and flowers
and oil
topped with linen covers
From the trousers
which I wore

shredded at the hem
until my knee
right through

and they became

rags to rub the wax
into the grooves
of images
and chairs

ties to keep
small bundles
as one
the bones

salvaged and cleaned
now resting in peace

upon the sill
